AS level UCAS points

An AS level is worth 20 UCAS points at A, 16 at B, 12 at C, 10 at D and 6 at E. That’s 40% of the A level at each grade. Below: the table, what an AS adds to three A levels, and the rule that stops it counting twice.

AS level points table

GradeUCAS pointsA level same grade
A2048 points (AS is 42%)
B1640 points (AS is 40%)
C1232 points (AS is 38%)
D1024 points (AS is 42%)
E616 points (AS is 38%)

UCAS positions the AS at 40% of the A level, or the nearest whole number the formula allows. That’s why the percentages wobble between 38% and 42%.

Three A levels plus an AS

The usual case: three A levels and a fourth subject stopped at AS. Read across from your A level grades.

BBC plus an AS at A is 132, four points more than ABB on its own. If you are four to eight points short of an offer, an AS or an EPQ is the usual gap-filler, but only where the university counts it.

When an AS counts and when it doesn't

UCAS lists the habits universities share. The one that matters most for AS levels: they generally count only the highest level you took in a subject. An AS in chemistry is ignored once you also hold the A level in chemistry. The AS points are not added on top.

An AS in a different subject is a separate qualification and can count in a points offer. Some universities still cap the total at the best three A levels, or say “A levels only”. Read the full entry requirements on the course page, past the headline number.

In England the AS has been a separate exam from the A level since the reforms that began in 2015, so the AS grade does not feed into the A level. In Wales (WJEC) and Northern Ireland (CCEA) the AS is still the first part of the A level in most subjects. Either way, the Tariff gives an AS grade the same 20 to 6 points.

AS Double Award

A few subjects were offered as a double AS (two AS grades in one subject). Each grade carries its own points.

AS level questions

How many UCAS points is an AS level?

A is 20, B is 16, C is 12, D is 10 and E is 6. A U gets no points.

Is an AS level worth half an A level?

Less than half. UCAS sets the AS at 40% (or as close as possible) of the A level at each grade: an AS A is 20 points against 48 for an A level A.

Does an AS count if I take the full A level in the same subject?

Usually not. UCAS notes that universities generally count only the highest level in a subject, so an AS in biology is dropped once you have the A level in biology. A different subject is fine: an AS in a fourth subject can count in a points offer.

Do universities accept AS levels in an offer?

In points offers, often yes, but check the course page: some count only A levels, or only the best three. In grade offers such as ABB an AS sits outside the offer and does not replace an A level grade.

Can I drop an A level to an AS and keep the points?

If your school enters you for the AS exam in that subject, the AS grade carries its points. In England the AS is a separate exam from the A level, so this has to be planned in Year 12. Ask your school before you drop.
