UCAS Tariff · sized as three A levels

T Level UCAS points

A full T Level is worth between 72 and 168 UCAS points, the same range as three A levels. Distinction* is 168, Distinction 144, Merit 120, and a Pass is 96 or 72 depending on your core grade. If you finished only the core or only the occupational specialism, UCAS still gives it a value, and those tables are further down.

Why a Pass can be 96 or 72

A T Level has two graded parts. The core component is graded A* to E, like an A level. The occupational specialism is graded Distinction, Merit or Pass. Your overall grade combines the two, and for a Pass UCAS looks back at the core: a Pass with a core grade of C or better is worth 96 points (CCC at A level), while a Pass with a core grade of D or E is worth 72 (DDD).

At the top of the scale the same logic gives Distinction* its value. It takes an A* in the core and a Distinction in the specialism, and UCAS scores it at 168, the same as A*A*A*.

Core only or specialism only: partial T Level points

If you completed the industry placement and one of the two graded parts but not both, UCAS still allocates points. The amount depends on how your subject weights the core against the specialism: 30/70, 40/60 or 50/50. Find your subject in the list, then read the matching table.

T Levels next to A levels and BTECs

T Levels are two-year technical courses in England, launched in September 2020, that UCAS sizes as three A levels. Each one has a technical qualification (core plus occupational specialism), an industry placement with an employer, and a minimum standard in maths and English if you have not already met it.

On the tariff that puts a Distinction level with AAA at A level and DDD in a BTEC National Extended Diploma, all 144 points. A Merit sits with BBB, and a Pass with the core at C or above sits with CCC. The full A level scale is A* 56, A 48, B 40, C 32, D 24 and E 16 per subject.

One difference matters on results day. A T Level is one grade for one qualification, so an offer written as three A level grades (say, ABB with an A in maths) cannot be met with it. Offers in points can. If your target course quotes points, the pages for 120, 144 and 96 UCAS points show where a T Level lands next to everything else.

T Level points questions

How many UCAS points is a T Level?

A full T Level is worth 168 points at Distinction*, 144 at Distinction, 120 at Merit and either 96 or 72 at Pass, depending on whether your core grade was C or above (96) or D to E (72). Those are the same totals as A*A*A*, AAA, BBB, CCC and DDD at A level.

Is a T Level worth three A levels in UCAS points?

Yes. UCAS sizes a T Level as three A levels, so a Distinction (144) equals AAA and a Merit (120) equals BBB. The comparison is in points only: a course can still ask for specific A level subjects that a T Level does not cover.

What is a T Level Distinction* in UCAS points?

A Distinction* T Level is worth 168 UCAS points, the maximum any three-A-level-sized qualification can score. It needs an A* in the core component and a Distinction in the occupational specialism.

Why is a T Level Pass worth 96 or 72 points?

Because UCAS splits the Pass grade by the core result. A Pass with a core grade of A*, A, B or C is worth 96 points (the same as CCC). A Pass with a core grade of D or E is worth 72 (the same as DDD). Your certificate shows the core grade, so you can tell which applies.

Do I get UCAS points if I only completed the core?

Yes, as long as the industry placement was completed too. UCAS publishes a separate value for the core component plus placement, graded A* to E, and another for the occupational specialism plus placement, graded Distinction, Merit or Pass. The values depend on the subject: for a 40/60 subject such as Health, a core A* is 67 points and a specialism Distinction is 101. The tables on this page list all three weightings.

Do universities accept T Levels?

Many do, and UCAS gives every course provider the tariff values above so a T Level can be compared with A levels and BTECs. Acceptance is decided course by course though. Check the entry requirements on ucas.com for the course you want, and contact the university if T Levels are not mentioned.
