Graded exams · Grades 6 to 8
Music grades UCAS points, and LAMDA too
Grade 8 music with Distinction is worth 30 UCAS points, with Merit 27 and with a Pass 24. Grade 7 is worth up to 16 and Grade 6 up to 12; Grades 1 to 5 carry no points. LAMDA, Trinity drama and speech grades follow the same scale. Theory exams are smaller, topping out at 10 for Grade 8.

Practical, drama and speech grades
Instrument and singing exams, plus drama, acting, speech and musical theatre grades from ABRSM, Trinity, RSL, LCM and LAMDA.
| Grade | Distinction | Merit | Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 8 | 30 | 27 | 24 |
| Grade 7 | 16 | 14 | 12 |
| Grade 6 | 12 | 10 | 8 |
Note the jump: Grade 8 is almost double Grade 7. UCAS puts Grade 8 in a bigger size band, which is why a Grade 8 Distinction (30) outscores an AS at grade A (20) and gets close to an A level D (24) even with a Pass.
Music theory grades
| Grade | Distinction | Merit | Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 8 theory | 10 | 9 | 8 |
| Grade 7 theory | 8 | 7 | 6 |
| Grade 6 theory | 6 | 5 | 4 |
Theory, music literacy and popular music theory exams sit on this smaller scale. Theory and practical are separate qualifications, so a Grade 8 practical and a Grade 8 theory can both appear on your list.
The exceptions worth checking
Most graded exams on the Tariff follow the two scales above, but not all. Dance grades are the main exception: RSL dance, for example, gives Grade 8 Distinction 22 points rather than 30. Some newer RSL performance and musical theatre exams also have a Distinction* grade, worth 33 at Grade 8. If your exam is a dance grade or has a D*, look up its exact title in the UCAS Tariff tables.
Grades 1 to 5 are level 1 and 2 qualifications. Like GCSEs, they are not on the Tariff at all.
Do universities count them?
UCAS is clear that a qualification being on the Tariff does not oblige any university to accept it. With graded exams, practice really does vary. Some points offers count a Grade 8 in full. Others limit what they count, for example only the highest-scoring three A levels. Grade offers, such as AAB, leave them out.
Where it does count, 30 points can be the difference. ABB is 128; ABB plus a Grade 8 Distinction is 158, past an A*AA offer of 152 in points terms. If your offers are in points, ask the admissions office whether graded exams count before results day, not after.
Add your grades to the rest of your results in the UCAS points calculator, which has both scales built in. For other ways to add points, see how to get more UCAS points.
Music and drama grade questions
How many UCAS points is Grade 8 music?
A Grade 8 practical exam is worth 30 UCAS points with Distinction, 27 with Merit and 24 with a Pass. That holds for ABRSM, Trinity, RSL and LCM (University of West London) performance grades on the 2027 Tariff.
How many UCAS points is Grade 8 theory?
Grade 8 music theory is a smaller qualification: 10 points for Distinction, 9 for Merit, 8 for Pass. Grade 7 theory is 8, 7 or 6, and Grade 6 theory 6, 5 or 4.
Do Grades 1 to 5 give UCAS points?
No. Grades 1 to 5 are below level 3, so they are not on the Tariff, in the same way GCSEs are not. Points start at Grade 6.
How many UCAS points is LAMDA Grade 8?
LAMDA Grade 8 exams in drama, speech, communication, performance and musical theatre are worth 30 with Distinction, 27 with Merit and 24 with a Pass, the same as Grade 8 music practical.
If I have Grade 7 and Grade 8 on the same instrument, do both count?
Normally only the higher one does. UCAS says that where qualifications follow on from each other, you get points for the highest level achieved, unless the university says otherwise. Grade 8 piano and Grade 8 violin are different subjects, so both can count.
Do universities accept music grades in an offer?
Some do in points offers. Others limit what they count, for example only your highest-scoring three A levels. Grade offers like ABB ignore them. Music degrees and conservatoires usually care about the grade itself, and the audition, more than the points. Check the course page.
