UCAS points chart

Every grade in the UCAS Tariff with what it is worth, and a converter that runs the other way: give it a points total and it tells you which grades add up to it.

Turn points back into grades

Universities quote offers in points, sixth forms talk in grades. This closes the gap.

Type the number a university asked for. Most points-based offers land between 48 and 168.

Questions about the chart

How do I convert UCAS points into grades?

Work backwards from the tariff. Each grade has a fixed points value, so a total can be split into the grades that add up to it. 112 points, for example, is BBC at A-level or DMM in a BTEC Extended Diploma. Type your number into the converter above and it lists every combination.

Is one A-level grade always worth the same points?

Yes. An A* is 56, an A is 48, a B is 40, a C is 32, a D is 24 and an E is 16. Those values do not change between subjects or between universities. What changes is how many points a course asks for.

Why does my offer number not match any grade combination?

Because points-based offers are usually a floor, not an exact target. A course asking for 100 points means 100 or more, and three A-levels cannot land on exactly 100. The converter above tells you the nearest totals that are actually possible.

Do AS-levels count towards my total?

They do, if the university includes them. An AS at grade A is worth 20 points, roughly half an A-level. Some courses count them, others only look at your three full A-levels, so read the offer wording.

Is a BTEC worth the same as A-levels?

On the tariff, yes. A BTEC National Extended Diploma is sized as three A-levels, so DDD is 144 points, the same as three A grades at A-level would be short of. The equivalence is in the points, but individual courses can still ask for specific subjects.

What about the old UCAS points system?

The tariff was rebuilt in 2017. Under the old system an A-level A was 120 points and totals ran into the hundreds, which is why you still see offers quoted as 300 points in older forum posts. Everything on this page is the current tariff.

Do all universities use UCAS points?

No. Many courses, especially at the more selective universities, ask for grades directly, such as AAB. Points-based offers are more common where applicants arrive with a mix of qualifications, because points make different routes comparable.
