Missed your offer? Results day 2027

A level results come out on Thursday 12 August 2027, Scottish results on Tuesday 10 August. Missing your firm offer doesn’t end the story: the university can still say yes, your insurance may catch you, and Clearing runs until 18 October. Here’s the order to do things in.

UCAS has not yet published its 2027 results-day timings. In 2026 the Hub status changed from 08:00 on A level results day and Clearing choices could be added from 13:00. We’ll update this when the 2027 times are out.

Before you open the envelope

Universities get your results a few days early, under embargo, so most decisions are already made when you log in. Your UCAS Hub shows your status (placed at firm, placed at insurance, unsuccessful, or a changed course offer). It does not show grades. Those come from school. The Hub can take up to 24 hours to update, so a status that hasn’t moved by the morning is not a no.

Have your UCAS personal ID, your results and a phone to hand. If you might need Clearing, a shortlist of two or three courses made before the day saves a lot of panic.

If you missed your firm offer

Work through it in this order:

  1. Check the Hub. If it says you’re placed at your firm, you’re in, even with lower grades. Universities often take people who narrowly missed.
  2. Still waiting? Call the firm university. They may be deciding, or may offer a different course instead. A changed course offer has to be accepted or declined within five days.
  3. Placed at insurance? That place is yours. You can’t move back to your firm, and you can’t swap the two.
  4. Unsuccessful at both? You are in Clearing. If you held a conditional firm and a conditional insurance, Clearing only opens to you once both have said no.

Your points still matter in Clearing. Vacancies list the grades or points they want, so knowing your exact total helps. The calculator adds it up in a few seconds.

How Clearing works

You can use Clearing if you applied after 30 June, have no offers (or none you wanted), missed your conditions, or declined your firm place. Search the vacancies, call the universities, and only add a Clearing choice in your application once a university has said it will take you. Adding it counts as accepting. You can add one at a time.

UCAS also shows unplaced applicants up to 50 matched courses. You can mark yourself interested in up to five at once, and a university with space may call you.

Did better than expected?

Adjustment, the old way to trade up, was scrapped from 2022 entry. Today, if you hold an unconditional firm place, you can press Decline my place and look in Clearing. Be sure first: it is instant, UCAS can’t undo it, your insurance goes too, and any accommodation or scholarship tied to the place is cancelled. Get a firm yes from the new university before you press it.

Asking for a review of marking

If one paper sits a few marks under the grade you needed, ask your school about a priority review of marking. It is for A level and other level 3 results where a university place depends on the outcome, and is finished within 15 days. Your school sends it and needs your written consent. AQA charges £61.70 and its deadline for 2027 is 19 August.

Tell your firm university you’ve asked. The exam board only informs UCAS if the grade changes, and universities usually hold places only until 2 September.

Results day questions

When is A level results day 2027?

Thursday 12 August 2027, from the JCQ key dates for the June 2027 series. Scottish results come out two days earlier, on Tuesday 10 August 2027.

What happens if I miss my firm offer by one grade?

Your firm university may still confirm you. UCAS says universities can be flexible, especially if you only narrowly missed, and may also offer a place on a different course. If they say no and you met your insurance, you go there.

Can I still use Adjustment if I beat my offer?

No. UCAS ended Adjustment from 2022 entry. If you hold an unconditional firm place and want to trade up, you use Decline my place and look in Clearing, which cancels your firm place for good.

Does UCAS Track still exist?

No. UCAS retired Track in 2022. Your offer status now shows in your UCAS Hub. It does not show your grades: those come from your school or college.

Can I go to my insurance instead of my firm if I meet both?

No. If you meet your firm conditions you are placed there. To go elsewhere you would have to decline your place and use Clearing, and check first that the other university will take you.

Should I ask for a review of marking if I missed my offer?

If one paper is close to the grade boundary, it can be worth it. Ask your school to request a priority review (it is done within 15 days), and tell your firm university, because the exam board only tells UCAS if the grade changes.
